What's next?

Congratulations grade 11 - everyone has a green flag this term.  A few people made some last minute additions to their CAS portfolios leading to green flags in these reports.

Next term it will be impossible to get a green flag at the last minute.

In order to make sure that your CAS portfolio is satisfactory you must start uploading evidence/reflections on an ongoing basis.

You must also show that you have been part of at least ONE CAS project and that means that you must show that you have followed the CAS stages:

Investigation; preparation, action, demonstration and reflection.

We will talk more about this at the beginning of next term.
We will also go over how to do good, meaningful reflections.

Amnesty International Group

The Amnesty group has been campaigning for the rights of a Malaysian cartoonist through drawing their own cartoons and posting them under #zunar.  Here are some of the pictures they have posted on the wall in school.  You can read more about Zunar's situation at: zunar

Volunteering opportunities

Just now there are a lot of opportunities for people who speak Swedish to help refugees with improving their language skills.  See http://www.volontarbyran.org/ for details or ask me.

If you are good at art, once again an organisation  called 'Untold Stories' that works with human rights in Africa is looking for people to illustrate.
'We are looking for illustrators who are skilled at drawing in digital or traditional media. You should be able to draw a picture that illustrates what is being told in an article or an interview.'

Otherwise enjoy your break and don't forget to keep documenting your CAS experiences.  No one attempted last week's quiz so it is still open.  See the last blog post for the details.

First term of CAS

Most of you are off to a good start and have added lots of CAS experiences.  It is good to see a variety of Creativity, Activity and Service.  Today, I have set all the progress markers that will appear on the final reports.  It is pleasing to see so many gold cups for outstanding performance.  These were given to students who have:

  • a variety of experiences across the 3 strands
  • have goals and descriptions for all their experiences
  • have evidence and reflections for most of their experiences.

Green flags have been given to those who have written goals and descriptions for most experiences and may even have started with evidence and reflection.

At the beginning of next term, all students without reflections and/or evidence for every experience will get a red flag.  You MUST start adding evidence and/or reflection.  Without it, even if you have participated in 500 CAS experiences, you will not get an IB Diploma. You MUST demonstrate that you have tried reach the learning outcomes (LOs) at least once.

CAS Projects

Remember that CAS projects require that you show how you have followed the CAS stages -

Investigation; preparation, action, demonstration and reflection.

Don't mark every experience a project unless you can show how you went through the stages.

CAS Service

Students wearing the red AIDs day ribbons
You should always consider the CAS stages when doing service.  You should think about how the service impacts on communities.  Remember thinking global, acting local is something that is encouraged.  Service can often be in response to something you have learnt or heard at school.  Last week we had a speaker about AIDS awareness.  A few weeks ago a speaker about Ebola.  What kind of responses could be appropriate for these events?  Stine and Angela made red ribbons for everyone to wear in response to AIDS awareness day.  Think creatively and I am sure you will find opportunities arise from what we do in school.

Remember you must have evidence and reflection to qualify for the IB Diploma

This weeks quiz questions.
1. What must you have in order to show that you have met the LOs?
2. What do you need to do to get a green flag next term?
3. What happens if you do not complete CAS?
Be the first person to write the answers on a piece of paper and hand to me personally to claim your prize.

Evidence, Evidence, Evidence

It's great to see so many of you have green flags and have started getting involved in CAS experiences.  The next step it to start adding evidence.  Even if you have an approved experience with a good description and goals, it will not help you to get a completed CAS portfolio unless there is evidence of your participation.

Evidence can be:

  • photos
  • schedules
  • files with planning/minutes of meetings and other documents
  • oral recordings
  • film recordings
  • emails
  • gym attendance records
  • supervisor comments
  • links to websites/blogs/Instagram accounts
  • reflections - written/oral/pictorial
The above list is not exhaustive - use your imagination but make sure that you have evidence.  Without it your portfolio will not receive a 'complete' at the end of IB and you will not get a diploma.

Adding evidence as you go along is much easier than trying to find it a year later.

Some of you will have red flags on your reports at the end of the term.  Make sure to take the time to remedy this situation.  You will find my comments on your portfolio.  If you have been asked to make an appointment, do so as soon as possible if you wish to get a green flag.

Volunteer opportunties

A group called Action 10 is looking for people to help them in evaluation of their programs -

Action10 is a nonprofit organisation operating in low-income countries (www.action10.org). We have programs in seven countries: Kenya, Uganda, Togo, Cameroon, Liberia, Nigeria and Colombia. Our vision is a world without extreme poverty.

The prize for the last quiz has not been claimed.  You can find the questions on the post 'Keeping up-to-date.' First person to write the correct answers to the questions on paper  and give it to me, gets the prize!

Reports coming up

I know that everyone is very busy with exams and other assessments at the moment so I will keep this post short.

Your CAS status will appear in your report at the end of this term.  Please check the notes that I have left on your portfolio to see what you need to do to get a green flag.  I expect the following:

  • all experiences are approved
  • you have started adding evidence and reflections
  • you have uploaded you personal profile and CAS proposal form

CAS events you might see around in before the end of term:

Amnesty - currently working on the Write for Rights campaign.  The focus is on Zunar, a Malaysian cartoonist who is at risk of being jailed for his views.  You can see his website at http://www.zunar.my/

Shoe Box Appeal - some of the boys will be encouraging you to give gifts to less fortunate people at Christmas.

Creativity Club is organising drawings for a peace quilt to be presented at the Olympics in Rio.

Rhino group are embarking on a social media campaign to raise awareness of the plight of the rhinos. They might ask you to have your photo taken with a rhino horn for their Instagram account.

Quiz - no one successfully answered last week's quiz. I still have the prize, so if you are interested it is still open! See the last post for details.

Keeping up-to-date

It is great looking through the CAS portfolio's and seeing that so many of you are involved in many wonderful experiences.  The issue now for many people is to maintain the commitment and make sure that everything counts.  To be sure that an experience counts it most meet the following guidelines.

Making sure it counts

  • You have a description that explains what the experience actually involves
  • You have written goals that show how you will achieve the learning outcomes
  • You have selected learning outcomes (no more than 3) that you can achieve through that particular experience
  • You add evidence of your participation - can be photos, files, links, meeting minutes, audios, films etc,
  • You show how you have achieved the learning outcomes as part of the experience (though reflections/evidence or other ways).
  • You fill in the CAS questions - which every are appropriate - when the experience is complete
  • You request a supervisor report (if you have a supervisor) or let me know that an experience is complete.

The sooner the better

Don't leave the adding of evidence etc too long.  It is much easier to do as soon as you have completed an experience.  All of you who helped out with the film festival over the last week should make sure to complete that experience in your portfolio as soon as possible as film festival emails close down once the festival is over.

Red Flag?

If you still have a red flag you should see me to book at time to work out how you can avoid that flag being on your December report-

Happening at the moment

The Creativity club is looking at organising participation in a peace quilt to be put together from drawing of school children around the world.  Look out for information about that.

Amnesty is working on the right for writes campaign and will asking people if they would like to draw cartoons in support of a Malaysian cartoonist who is threatened with many years in jail.

Annexe council is working on an anti-cyberbullying project.

Shoe box appeal - bring in any empty shoe boxes you have at home.  More details about this later.

Are you in a group and would like me to report on what you are doing?  Let me know.

Have you read this far?  Congratulations!  Be the first to write the answers to these 3 questions on a piece of paper and give it to me to get a prize.
1. How may learning outcomes should you have per experience?
2. When should you  fill in the CAS questions?
3. What should you do if you have a red flag?

Change of Status on ManageBac

Over the last week I have reset all the progress indicators on ManageBac.  Here is an explanation of what the indicators mean:

Gold Cup - Everything is up-to-date. All Learning Outcomes are covered. You are well on your way with CAS.
Green Flag - Files uploaded, most experiences approved. Good start.
Red Flag - Files not uploaded, few or no approved experiences.  I am concerned about how you will complete CAS
Arrows - Files uploaded. Mostly Ok but a few details missing, possibly from experience descriptions and goals.

Please check your portfolio.  Don't put it off as it gets harder to make up.  As far as I can see, everyone of you has an experience that qualifies for CAS - mostly it is just a matter of writing it up correctly.  Note that your status will appear on your report at the end of the term.

Reflections and Evidence

Now is the time to start collecting evidence of your participation in experiences.  Photos, links, schedules, screenshots, recordings, film, audio, references, certificates, files.  All these and more are acceptable forms of evidence.  Upload them as soon as you get them - they can be hard to find later on.

Coming Up

Shoe box Appeal - start bringing in shoeboxes.  I will set up an box to leave items to be packed or you can pack your own and bring them in.  Please click here to see the kind of items that are requested.  It is in Swedish but can be easily read with googletranslate.

Build a Ginger Bread House

The annual 'pepparkakshus' competition organised by the Architecture and Design Museum has opened.  This is a great way to show your design skills.  It is often entered by architects and bakers along with school classes.  You can read the details here.  The theme this year according to the translation is: "New lair - Stay in new ways".  I would translate it more like - 'New Home - live in new ways.'  Why not get a group together and make a home!  All houses must be delivered to the museum on the weekend of the 27th - 29th November so get baking.

Annexe Council

Just before the autumn break, Annexe council was selling Halloween Candy.  The candygrams were delivered after the break and many people were happy to receive candy with messages from friends or secret admirers.  All the money collected with go the Nepal Project.

Helping in the preschool

Some students in grade 11 have begun helping out in the pre-school at SIS.  Some who had planned to work there no longer can and the PreK teachers are happy to take some other students.  This is a great opportunity.  Please see me if you are interested in this.  You need to have a 'gap' during the school day to be able to do this experience.

Rhino Group blog

Check out the rhino group's blog here.  They are having an extra meeting after school on Wednesday to plan how they can spread their message to the rest of the world! Regular meetings are returning to Thursday break after Friday didn't work out.  You will find links to facebook and instagram accounts as well.

Helping at Christmas

There are still a lot of jobs on volontärbyrån to help out around Christmas.  See me if you need help finding them.

Too much to do?

It is great that so many of you are very active in participating in CAS experiences.  I would like to issue a word of caution to those of you who have not really got started.  Don't think that you will have time later!  This is probably the calmest period in the IB that you will have.  If you  don't believe me, just take a look at the grade 12s just now.  At this time next year, you will have so many deadlines with Extended Essays, Internal and External Assessments, that CAS will probably start to take a back seat.  Any learning outcomes that you have not worked towards will become difficult to achieve. Keep in mind that you must have evidence of each learning outcome.

CAS Learning Outcomes

A requirement of CAS is that you achieve the 7 learning outcomes through your CAS experiences. Your portfolio must contain evidence that you have met these outcomes. You can achieve an outcome more than once but each outcome must be attained at least once and your CAS experiences must cover a period of 18 months.

Quality not quantity

You have all heard that expression before and it really does apply to CAS.  It is not how much CAS you do, but how well you do it that counts.  If you find that you are unable to make meetings for one of your experiences because it clashes with another experience, then perhaps you need to take stock of what you are doing.  It is better to be 100% committed to one experience than to be 20% committed to 5 different experiences.  If you are a member of a group like Amnesty, MUN, Annexe or the Rhino Preservation Group,  it is necessary that you attend all the meetings. You are also expected to work on the project outside meeting time.  Just turning up it not enough.  You will not achieve the learning outcomes just by being present.  You have to actually believe and commit to the project. If the group meets every week and goes over the same points as the week before without going forward, it serves no purpose.

Don't be afraid to drop experiences if you feel that you have over committed.  Decide what you want to focus on and do that.  Maybe you can be part of one group this term and another next rather than both at the same time.

Shoe Box Appeal

Some of you were involved with the shoe box appeal last year.  This was a project that involves packaging Christmas Presents for needy people into shoe boxes and wrapping them.  They are then given out through different aid organisations in Sweden to people who might otherwise not get any presents.  The homepage for this organisation is here: skokartongsappellen.  If there is anyone who is interested in being part of this, please let me know and we can start collecting shoe boxes and items to go in them.  A list of desired items can be found on the web page.  If we start a little earlier this year, it could be possible to involve more of the school.  The webpage is in Swedish, but can be easily translated.

Make sure you portfolio is up-to-date

People who do not have the correct documentation and have not started actively participating in CAS experiences will be called to interviews next week.  Please make sure that your documents are uploaded in the correct place.  See the picture below.

Have you read this far?

If read this blog, you have the chance to win a prize. The first student who can write the answers to 3 questions about this blog post on a piece of paper and give them to me will receive a reward. The questions are:
1. What word do you click in to reach the homepage of the group organising the shoe box appeal?
2. What is going to happen to people who have not uploaded the CAS personal Profile and Proposal form?
3. What are the names of the 4 groups that are mentioned in the section - Quality not Quantity?
Be the first person to bring the correct answers to me on a piece of paper and you will get the prize.

Volunteering Opportunities

On volontarbyran just now are lots of volunteering opportunities.  Here is a selection of the ones that might be suitable for you:

Paragames - last weekend in October - this event is being held at Eriksdallshallen and they are looking for people to help as functionaries, serving tea and coffee etc, and even filming the event.  Information is in Swedish, but not difficult to follow if you use a translating tool.  These games are for people with both physical and intellectual disabilities.  There are people coming from other countries so I don't think it is a disadvantage if you can't speak Swedish - an advantage if you speak other languages.  Starts this  Friday.

Christmas duties - it has become very popular to help out charities at Christmas time.  People are needed to serve meals, play with children, work in the kitchens etc.  on the main days around Christmas Eve.  If you are interested in this it is a good idea to sign up soon.  There are several groups organising Christmas dinners for people.  You can often choose one particular shift.  Two groups that are organising these dinners are 'Jul in Gemenskap' and 'Fatima Unionen'.  The guests are people living alone, on the streets or others without the money or ability to have a  proper Christmas meal.

Baking for Christmas - do you love baking and want to help out at Christmas?  'Jul in Gememskap' are looking for people to bake biscuits, pepparkakor and bullar for their Charity dinners. You need to deliver them on Dec 23rd to Emmanuel Church near the school.  Sign up now if you are interested.   All goods must be home baked.

RedCross Södermalm - is looking for volunteers to work in their shop on Saturday mornings

Check your CAS portfolio

I have written notes on a lot of portfolios this week.  If you still have a red flag, you really should look at what I wrote and see how to change it to green.  Remember that a satisfactory CAS portfolio is a requirement for the IB Diploma.  If you are not up-to-date you will receive a red flag on your report at the end of the year.  This is a warning that your portfolio is unsatisfactory.

Creative, spontaneous and service minded

Last week some students in the creativity club saw that the Breast Cancer foundation in Sweden was having a campaign.  They decided to jump on board and baked some pink cakes and cookies.  They sold their goods to MYP and DP students and gave out information about the Breast Cancer Foundation.  They managed to raise not only awareness of this important issue, but also 528kr which they will donate to the foundation to further research into this condition.
If you wish to contribute to their collection - it is still open.  Go into the cancer foundation at siscollection and support this worthwhile cause.

A note about fundraising experiences

It's great that the students want to raise money for good causes, but it is also important to go through the procedure properly and remember that raising awareness is a big part of what we should be doing in CAS.  No one should give money to a CAS experience without knowing what the money is for so it is important that all fund raising efforts inform people about the cause.  CAS experiences involving service should go through the CAS stages and all should be approved by the CAS coordinator before starting.  Provision must be made for collecting, storing and donating any money that is raised. Please make sure you have spoken to either Ms Smith  (grade 11)or Mr Boswell (grade 12) before collecting any money.

Evidence

It is important that you start uploading evidence of CAS experiences.  Everyone should have started at least one experience by now so you should all have something to add.  You can add pictures, files, videos audio.  This is especially important for people who volunteer for short experiences such as the film festival and Stockholm Open.  It can be hard to find some evidence if you wait 6 months.  Do it immediately.  Take a photo of your ID/pass card.  Collect programs, take photos, get a reference letter - it doesn't matter what form the evidence takes, but it must exist!

Still have a red flag?

That means one of the following:
  • you have not uploaded both the personal profile and CAS proposal
  • you have experiences that do not have complete descriptions and goals that show how you will meet the learning outcomes that you have chosen
  • You have not uploaded any experiences.

Experiences not approved?

That means that you have not shown how you will meet the learning outcome (s) in your description or goals.

Received a note from me via Managebac?

Please reply!  I spend time sending you notes with questions or suggestions - if I look a week later and find no action has been taken and no reply given, I suspect that you have not been checking your email or CAS portfolio. If I send a message, I expect a response, just as you would if you sent me a message.

Get a green flag!

Please take some time over the next 2 weeks to get your portfolio to the point that it is given a green flag.  Anyone who doesn't have a green flag after the break, will be called in for an extra interview

Volunteer work

VolontärByrån has a new look on their web page.  Naturally there are lots of opportunities there for people who wish to help in the community.  You can now search by category - for example - creative, IT etc.

Red Flag? What should you do?

I have been through all the CAS portfolios and you should all have received a message if you have a red flag. A red flag means that you are not really up-to-date with what you need to do.  Don't put it off as you must start your CAS now in order to make the 18 months required by the IB.

Things to check:
  • Have you uploaded your Personal Profile?
  • Have you uploaded your CAS proposal?
  • Have you added current CAS experiences?
  • Do all your experiences have clear descriptions and goals that relate to the learning outcomes that you have selected for that experience?
If you have done all of the above you should have a green flag.

Next Step

Once you have a green flag and are on your way, you need to start uploading evidence and reflections where appropriate.  Don't wait until an experience is complete.  Get used to checking your portfolio for 10 minutes a week and adding anything you can.  Evidence can be photos, films, membership, gym attendance, training schedules etc.  Reflections should be done if you have something significant to report about.  They do not have to be done every week.  You will get some time to reflect in advisory class in groups as well.  We will talk more about this in the coming weeks.

Learning outcomes and goals

It is important that there is a link between your goals and the learning outcomes.  If you choose - show commitment and perseverance in CAS activities - then you must make a goal that matches that learning outcome.
e.g. You are a member of a sporting team.  Your goal could be to train and participate at least 2 times a week.  Then you would need evidence to show that you have done this.
If you are going to the gym - your goal might be to attend 2 times a week - then you need to have evidence that you have done this.
If you choose - Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth - you need to show how you have done that.
e.g. You participate in a fun run - your goal is to run the 50% of the distance as you know that you do not have a great amount of stamina.  You manage to run 50% so you have shown that you can increase your stamina but still need to develop it more.  Your strength was that you made it to the end of the run.

Look at your goals.  Look at your evidence.  Do they match with your chosen Learning Outcome? Remember that is evidence and reflections that show that you achieved the Learning Outcomes along with the 18 months of CAS that determines whether you get a 'complete' at the end of the IB.

Volunteer Work

Keep an eye out on volontärbyrån later in the week.  Just now it is not possible to search the site as they are changing to a new system.  It should be up and running on Tuesday.

CAS stages

This week we talked about the CAS stages.  Hopefully, you now have a better idea of how to record and plan your CAS project.  You should use the CAS stages for at least one project. They can be used for any long term experiences where you are working together with others.  Using the CAS stages, makes it easy to demonstrate how you have achieved the learning outcomes as well.

Evidence and reflections

Don't forget to keep uploading any evidence or thoughts about your experiences in your CAS portfolio.  The more you add, the easier it is to show that you have achieved the learning outcomes.

Outdoor Club

This week we heard from Ms Celino about the outdoor club.  This is a great opportunity to get some outdoor experience that qualifies for CAS activity. The group will kick-off on the 17th of October at school.  Make sure you there if you wish to join.  Contact Ms Celino to let her know you are coming. This is an exciting group and can give you many chances to be active - from hiking, to outdoor cooking, to kayaking and climbing.  If you decide to participate in this group, make sure you are committed as it is an ongoing experience and call only work if you make a firm decision to be part of it from the beginning.

Personal Profiles and CAS proposals

Don't forget to upload these documents in your CAS portfolio on ManageBac.  The deadline if the 5th October.  Make sure you see me if you don't know how to do it.

Amnesty International Group

This group kicked off their My Body, My Rights campaign by hanging coat hangers with message about decriminalising abortion in Ireland.  They will be spreading this message further over the next few weeks.

Rhino Group

Today more than 10 people from school turned up for the Global March for Elephants and Rhinos.  We walked together with about 30 others through the city from the Thai Embassy to the Chinese Embassy to leave our message about protecting these animals.

Just now on Volontärbyrån

There are a lot of volunteer opportunities just now.  Here are just a couple that I have selected (from the Swedish pages).  There are a lot more - have a look yourself and don't hesitate to answer as sometimes they disappear if they are popular experiences.

Young people to meet up with young refugees and do outdoor activities hiking etc.
Äventyr och friluftsliv med nyanlända ungdomarMiljöverkstan Flaten

The RedCross is looking for people to sort clothes - recently they have received so many that they have been unable to keep up.  Weekend shift available on the 10th October.

CAS has started!

It was great to meet with so many of you over the past weeks and hear about your amazing ambitions for CAS.  I am really looking forward to hearing more as the IB progresses.  Some experiences that are planned are huge.  Others are not, but are just as worthwhile.  CAS is about learning from doing and that is different for everyone.  Sometimes we make big plans but don't reach our goal.  What is important is the process that we go through and what we learn along the way.

What You Need to do Now

CAS experiences
You all should have started adding CAS experiences to your CAS portfolio on ManageBac by now.  Please make sure that they are completely filled in.  Once all the details are there, I give them an 'approved' status.  You will know that I have done that as a blue thumbs up sign appears next the experience.

Evidence and reflections
Once you have started with a CAS experience you can also upload evidence and reflections.  There is no set amount of times you have to do this, but you should try to ensure that you have demonstrated how you reached the learning outcome(s) that you have selected for the experience. Remember no more than 3 learning outcomes per experience.

Personal Profile and CAS Proposal Forms
Make sure that you have now filled in the electronic versions of these forms and uploaded them onto ManageBac.  You can edit them in anyway you like.  They are your record of where you began CAS. At the end we will  compare that with where you end up.  Please finish these by October 5th.

CAS Stages
When planning a CAS project or a major long term experience it is good to use the CAS Stages document.  You need to show how you have gone through the investigation, preparation, action, reflection and demonstration stages.  Everyone must follow this process for at least one project that you are involved in as a part of CAS.

The links to all the documents can be found to the right side of the blog post in the page called 'links to documents'

Volunteering opportunities.

Don't forget to keep a look out on VoluntärByrån. Some people mentioned wanting to work with animals.  I have added some links for some animal shelters in Stockholm to the page Webpages with ideas and inspiration for CAS - to the right of the blog post.

Experiences to Inspire you

Here is  selection of the experiences that I heard about this week:

  • Creativity club - some students are going to get together to teach and share with each other the creative skills that they have.  Each meeting someone will take charge and show the others how to be creative.  They have plans to include everything from literature analysis to baking to dancing.
  • Hiking/trekking  including plans to walk to the South Pole and around Mount Blanc
  • Learning/continuing to play an instrument - some with the idea to do a performance for the class or to start a music/cultural evening and invite people in
  • Helping elderly people through inviting them for afternoon tea or cleaning their homes
  • Environmental project - after the grade 10s participated in the Clean Up Sweden Week last year some are now hoping to spread this message to the rest of the school and make it a much bigger event
  • Film making - I am sure we have some future directors amongst us.  People are filming a variety of topics - skiing, football, music
  • Blogs - people are blogging about everything imaginable - Stockholm events, fashion, football, training etc.
  • Some students have plans to develop a project around Operation Smile and have been inspired by having been in contact with children in countries where this organisation helps children with cleft palette surgery
Many students are engaged in established groups at the school such as:
  • MUN - planning a conference in the school
  • Amnesty - look for their installation about 'My Body. My Rights' in the coming weeks
  • Rhino Preservation Group - they are joining the Global March4Elephants&Rhinos again this year on the 4th of October - all are welcome to join. Come to the meeting on Thursday at 10.30 in C10 to sign up and get a placard.

Interview Week and starting your experiences

This week I will start interviewing all grade 11 students.  Interviews should be finished before we go on our break next week.  Please check the previous post or managebac for what you need to bring to the interview.  Interview times are up in the pink notice board.  Make sure you have ticked your time if it works for you or that you see me if you need to change.

First experience and continuous participation

Hopefully all of you have started or planned to start you first experience for CAS.  On Friday I showed you how to add an experience to ManageBac.  If you can add one before our meeting that would be great.  Don't worry if you are not sure what to do - we will look at it in the interview.  You need to get started with CAS experiences as you must participate in CAS for at least 18 months.  That means if you start now you will be able to finish around the end of February next year.  You have up until the end of April to complete all your CAS.  It is important that your participation in CAS is continuous - that is you are always participating in a CAS experience throughout the 18 months.

CAS stages

For some of your CAS experiences you will need to plan using the CAS stages.  I hope to explain them more in Advisory after the September break.

Some CAS ideas

The Stockholm  Film Festival is still looking for volunteers.  http://www.stockholmfilmfestival.se/en/about-us/work-volunteer  It is rather intensive but is a fun way to get to meet more people around Stockholm and participate it a great festival.

Refugees You cannot have missed all the talk about the refugee crises in Europe over the last few weeks.  Many organisations have started collections - money and goods.  If you are interested in working with this issue come and see me and I can tell you about the opportunities available.

Volontörbyran - don't forget there are many opportunities in Stockholm listed at this site - even more if you try the Swedish version.  At the moment they are still seeking helpers for the Halloween Festival and people to illustrate articles about human rights in Africa amongst other things.

Kindergarten Assistants: If you are interested in helping out in the kindergarten this term please see me and I can see if there are times that work out for you.  You need to be available at some time during the school day - that is when you have a study period.

First Experience

I am hoping that many of you have started on your first 'experience' by now.  On Friday, during advisory lesson, I will show you how to add experiences to your ManageBac profile.  You should also have your personal profile filled in and ready to present to me at your interviews next week.

First Interviews

Starting on Monday, I will be conducting interviews with students in grade 11.   You must bring your 'personal profile' form with you and you can also start filling in your 'CAS proposal' form - also included in the handbook.  Please bring your handbook as well.We will discuss what all of these an d hopefully make a plan to cover some of the next 18 months.  If you do not have these items that interview will have to be postponed meaning that you will have less time to get going with your CAS.

Checklist for interview:
  • personal profile form - filled in
  • CAS proposal form - filled in
  • CAS student handbook
  • computer
Most interviews will be held in room C10 unless there is class in there at the time.  When that happens we will go to a nearby room.

Do you have CAS ideas that you want me to include here?  Let me know.  Having trouble coming up with ideas?  I need some people to help me as part of a CAS committee.  You could be involved in posting on the blog, up-dating the pages and researching ideas.  If that interests you, come an let me know.

Some ideas for 'experiences' you could get involved in from VolontärByrån.  The first one is great for any talented artists amongst you.  The last is in Swedish.  For more opportunities and details see http://www.volontarbyran.org/

Illustrate articles about human rights in Africa!  (Distance Job)

Description of the volunteering opportunity:
UNTOLD STORIES:

Ethiopia is one of the worst cases of human rights abusers in the world, but due to government harassment of truth tellers, many stories of repression remain untold. No one is better telling these stories than those who have experienced the violations themselves.

Untold Stories is new project. It will be a website where people who have personal experiences about human rights abuses can tell their stories. Through personal in-depth-interviews, art, videos and articles, the viewer will be told how government repression can complicate, affect and completely change the lives of exiled journalists, jailed bloggers, struggling activists and others. The purpose of this project is not only to spread awareness and knowledge and giving people cause to care, but just as importantly it is to support the struggles of the persecuted.
Untold Stories will tell stories about all kinds of human rights abuses, but with a focus on freedom of expression and press freedom in Ethiopia. The human rights situation in other African countries will also be discussed.

We hope that you can come up with illustrations that will highlight a story in a text and make it even more powerful.

We would like to see examples of your art to see if you fit for the assignment.
