Activity - rugby
To reflect back on the season, a lot was accomplished. We managed to come second in the nationals, and compete on an international scale, when we traveled to Ireland. I feel as if my skills have been reinforced with a lot of training and matches with the local teams. These improved skills include those in 2 categories, teamwork and physical. Teamwork is important in a team based game such as rugby, and to communicate well with players in multiple languages (a lot of diversity in the team) can be challenging. Being able to speak multiple languages this really helped me with my communication skills. However rugby is very physically demanding and requires a lot of intensive workout sessions. We kept this up in the winter, where playing in the snow becomes to dangerous and cold, by going to the gym. With these developments, I see myself joining another rugby team in my future for example when I get to university.
Activity - soccer
Joining soccer has changed my life as a whole. Growing up in a community where the society does not value girls' sports forced me not to really participate in any of the sports activities. I have been able to learn new skills and interact with different people. I am still not perfect in my playing but I do ensure that I attend all practices to better myself and become a better player each day. I have played defence and as a goalkeeper (which is really tough). All these positions have triggered me to be a better person and I believe I will be able to reach my target(to score one goal) by the end of the term.
Service and creativity - reading to younger students in the library
- We felt very excited to be doing this, because we both enjoy reading and being around children. We also felt nervous because we didn’t know how the children would act, if they would be difficult or not. We also didn’t know how many kids would show up and that also made us feel nervous
What problems did you encounter?
- For the majority of the sessions, we only had one kid come. This isn’t necessarily a problem, but rather something we can improve and reflect on.
- Also we noticed that at times some of the kids were bored, in this situations we changed the activity we were doing or play some games. A lot of reading can get tough if it's not alternated with activities that switch on the brain
What did you learn from this experience?
- We learned a lot about how to deal with small children. We learn about how they think and the things they enjoy. Also how to encourage someone to do activities that may be boring in the first place, and enjoy them.
How did this experience reflect your personal ideas and values?
- at the beginning I didn’t quite enjoy the company of children. I didn’t know how to entertain them and what activities to do. With this activity my perspective towards them have changes. I now enjoy a little more spending time with them and I have learnt a lot from them.
- I love reading and I can tolerate children, however this experience allowed me to understand children a bit more and understand how they learn. I enjoyed doing this more than I thought I would, and with the child that did come every week, I feel like I had a greater appreciation for her commitment to reading and this club.
In what way did this experience challenge you to think differently about yourself or others?
- We realised how small children can be more interesting and fun to be with than we thought in the beginning. About ourselves, we realised that we felt more comfortable as the sessions went by. We also noticed this in the children, They get more fun and open as they get to know you.
Activity - basketball
Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.
Every day at practice I try to improve my basketball skills, specifically my shooting. So I come to every practice a couple minutes early to get a couple of shots up - both for long term improvement in my shooting technique and to retain the shooting touch for added shooting accuracy. I must know how much power to put into my shot depending on where I stand on the court and where to aim to maximise the chances of the ball going in. After every game and practice, I learn something new about how to play the sport - the type of knowledge that can only come from experience.
Creativity - MUN
This year's SISMUN (Stockholm International School Model United Nations) was very much enjoyable and successful as a whole. In this year's conference I was a head delegate representing India, in which I won best delegate for, a reporter for the school's newspaper and an Ambassador of the United Kingdom, to give a speech in the closing ceremony. I thoroughly enjoyed this year's topic, as I am more knowledgeable in science related topics such as antibiotic resistance. This is the reason as for why I felt I could involve myself more in these sort of events which would also boost my confidence in giving speeches, even improvised ones.
After a few solid months of hard work, the MUN team, myself included, managed to pull off an MUN conference that everyone was able to enjoy, even those how have little interest in these types of events. Everyone managed to have a say in solutions nations may have in protecting their population from diseases, which is a very real and ongoing crisis in the world of today. This also raised awareness of the topic as a whole. Some committees chose to have fun with the topic, whereas I chose to take a more realistic approach to the problem, present realistic action plans and collaborating with other delegates to come up with solutions that would benefit as many as possible. Although some of the solutions made were good, the real world is a way more complicated place to make decisions. However, one of the only things that did not go to plan was the fact that the guest speaker who was supposed to present in the closing ceremony was unable to attend due to their attention being needed elsewhere in more urgent matters. Other than that, I can conclude for myself that I am proud of this year’s MUN team and the SISMUN conference being a success and improved from last year's conference. The goal now is to make the next one even better and enjoyable.
Creativity and Service - Anti bullying films
Ethics:
Our main aim for this movie was to bring awareness for bullying. Recognizing bullying is wrong has affected my choices while making the movie as well as outside of making the movie. Our actions in the movie did not want to promote bullying but to tell people it is not okay. We had to be careful with what we said in the movie as this was aimed towards a school audience.
Together, all three areas have, I feel, made me into a better person, making be organize and make use of what I have to work together with others and use my skills. Ethics is also a big part of our world and now that I am aware of bullying and knowing it is not okay, I can help others.
Activity and service - running a football club for younger children
I have now had a couple of trainings with the 1-3 graders and one training with 4th and 5th graders. It was decided that for the first training with both groups, would have the purpose of us to be able to evaluate the skill level of the group. It became clear very fast that the grade 1-3, seem to lack a lot of experience and understanding when it comes to football. I see this to my benefit however, because this means that I will be able to start from the basics as well as it would allow me to easily monitor their improvement and growth. It have also come to realise that the children are incapable of staying focused for a longer amount of time than expected, which means that transitions between the drills must be done swiftly or they will lose their concentration.
Reflection:
I have come to realise that we have encountered a problem, in regards to the Friday's practices. Over the last couple of Friday's it has seemed to be that more and more students are quitting, due to the training both being on Fridays and in HumlegÄrden. Therefore we have ended up with only having three/four kids left. Having only three or four kids, has made it very hard for us to plan practices ahead of time. I see it therefore to be easier to combine the two groups and therefore only run practices on Mondays after school. With this change in practices, also comes the letting down of certain students, who are unable to practice on Mondays. However as the majority can do Mondays, and it would be more beneficial for all parties, I have decided to move the practice starting after the spring break to Mondays only.
